John Zimmerman of Honeywell FM&T is this year’s recipient of the Bryan K. Martin Technical Excellence Award. Within Honeywell FM&T, he is one of the primary proponents of the ISO standard commonly known as STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product model data) and Long Term Data Retention (LTDR) efforts. He has been involved with STEP since the development years, and he led an early deployment of STEP using Honeywell’s staff of engineers and computer scientists. He also works with STEP and LTDR in the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration, and in work with the National Archives and Records Administration, and many other agencies and organizations. His efforts to identify and address data retention and archiving issues have resulted in both new and renewed interest in the subject among his industry and government peers, co-workers, and customers. His enthusiasm, insight, and innovative research have stimulated awareness and interest among PDES, Inc. LTDR team members and members of other PDES, Inc. project teams.

John has been able to leverage his innovative work on addressing the physical logistics of long term data retention and researching the sustainability of digital data into potential solutions for LTDR issues. He is valued by his PDES, Inc. associates as an expert technical resource for data archiving and retention, and he is relied on for his skilled and perceptive methods for decomposing complex problems into their solvable components. John’s positive attitude, persistence, commitment, and technical expertise set an example for the entire PDES, Inc. team.

The PDES, Inc. Executive Board established the Bryan K. Martin Technical Excellence Award in memory of Bryan K. Martin’s exceptional record of strong leadership and tireless work to achieve PDES, Inc. goals. The Board presents this award annually to a PDES, Inc. technical resource who has demonstrated superior technical contributions to the program.
